"A Life Worth Living" versus "Living a Life Worthy"
As humans, (which we all are) we have a way of doing things- a way, a pattern, a routine, a schedule, traditions, celebrations, cultural similarities and differences that make us human; that make "life worth living", but sometimes we put these things in front of following Christ fully. Our goal as Christian humans/Christ-followers, is not to make our "life worth living," because our goal should be "living a life worthy" of the Lord.
In Colossians 1:9-11, we read:
"For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding. And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light."
Paul and Timothy are praying and asking God to fill the church of Colosse with the "knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding".
The reason they are praying this is so that they "may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way."
The way to live a life worthy of the Lord is to know God's will. We can know His will through spiritual wisdom and understanding, that comes by being filled with His Spirit.
Notice, we cannot know His will through earthly wisdom and understanding. We cannot know God's will by our own wisdom and understanding. To know God's Will we must have spiritual wisdom and understanding that is given to us if we ask Him.
James 1:5 states, "If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him."
As Christians, our every day desire should be to please God in every way. Not please ourselves, not please others, but please God. Of course, God allows us to enjoy pure and wholesome pleasures in this world He has created, but He wants us to seek Him first above these good pleasures, above our own desires, and even needs. As we do this, He does reward us and gives us every thing that we need to live a full, healthy life.
Matthew 6:33 states, "But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."
May this be our prayer today:
Father, in the name of Jesus, by the power of the Holy Spirit, please give us spiritual wisdom and understanding to know your will so that we may live a life worthy of you. Shift our way of thinking so that we are not focused on making life worth living dictated by the patterns of this world, but may our focus be on knowing you and how to live a life worthy of you. Lead us, Lord we pray, amen.
