Today

TODAY

There is just something about the simple word "today".

Today comes every day, and yet lasts only one day.

Do you know what I love about the start of each new day? God's mercies and compassions are new every morning. (Lamentations 3:22-23) In fact, everyday we get a fresh start, sort of like Bill Murray in Groundhog Day, except that our today does have an effect on our tomorrow. We all know it's wise to plan for our future and the changes in our life we wish to see, but the only way to have a better future, is to have a better today.

What will I do with my today?
The word of God says that "Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts.” (Hebrews 3:7-8)

What has God asked you to do with your today? Whatever it is, do not delay. Do it. Don't let your heart become hardened, thinking, "Why God, would you ask me to do this?" Obey God, while you still have today. If you hear God's voice today, soften your heart to His voice. Hear what God wants to say to you and accept it. If it's God's voice you know He will be gentle, loving, and lead you into good. If it's harsh, condemning, and a path to temptation, you know that voice is not God's.

"Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”— yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.”" (James 4:13-15)

Our today should be led not by our own will, but by the Lord's will. That is how Jesus taught His disciples to pray. "Thy kingdom come, they will be done." (Matthew 6:10) Jesus is our prime example to follow. The night before he was crucified for our sins he prayed, "not my will but yours be done." (Luke 22:42) I'm so glad he did God's will that "today" or salvation would not have come to this earth.

Our day should be bathed in prayer for God's will to be done in our lives.

How should I start my today?
Every morning I've been saying this verse out loud to my daughters on the way to school. It's a verse my mom often sang while I was a child and I'm finally beginning to understand what it means after all these years: "This is the day that the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it." (Psalm 118:24) God doesn't want us moping around, complaining, or having a "bad day". He wants us to have joy throughout our day. We cannot focus on our problems, but we must focus on God, our problem-solver.

Today God wants us to hear His voice. He wants us to know and follow His will, His plan for our lives. We only need to seek Him first today. He has got the answers to our problems. Turn your worry into joy today.

"But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." (Matthew 6:33-34)
